Why learn verses by heart?
The writer of Psalm 119 gives his reason in one line: “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” He’s talking to God. He keeps God’s word close because he doesn’t want to wrong the One who gave it.
Memorizing Scripture, then, is a way of keeping close the words of someone you love. Those words are there when you need them, in the moment you’re tempted to do what you know is wrong.
Pick one verse and keep it.
A Prayer to Remember
Father, give me one verse I can carry with me, and when I’m tempted, bring it to mind. I want to stay close to you.
