Hebrews 11:24-26

It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin. He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward.

Hebrews 11:24-26

The Great Reward

The faith of Moses was so strong according to these verses. He grew up in luxury living in the house of pharaoh. He was treated as a prince. However when he became an adult, he chose not to identify with the Egyptians, but instead to identify with his people: the Israelites. They were oppressed by the pharaoh and his people. They lived in slavery. According to these verses, Moses gave up the fleeting pleasures of sin and instead walked with his people. He knew he had a greater reward than anything the Egyptians could give him.

What about you? Are you living your life in such a way that shows that you are looking for a greater reward than anything this earth can give you?

A Prayer to Remember

Dear Lord,
You are worth more than anything this world could ever give. Thank you for heaven. Amen.

Daily Truth: The Fruit of the Spirit is Kindness

Kindness has become a popular word in recent years. It seems like both the Christian world and the secular world use this word in everyday context. Kindness is important to the Christian because it is how we show others that we are thankful for the work that God has done in our own lives. Kindness can be the means by which the secular world measures our Christianity. If someone claims to know Christ but is not kind to those around them, then how will they know Jesus is living inside of that person? What are some ways you can show kindness everyday and give glory to God?

First, find little ways to care about others throughout your day. This can be done with a simple question about how they are doing, or a note sent to show someone you are thinking about them, or even finding ways to bless others through doing something for them. When we serve others, it helps us become selfless and focus on our great God even more. Another way to show kindness to others is through the words that you say. Unfortunately many Christians deny who Christ is by the words that come out of their mouths. We can be a testimony to what God has done in our lives if the words that we say are kind and gentle.

Kindness is a fruit of the spirit because it radiates the gospel. If the gospel is planted in your heart, kindness will pour out of your life. You will be known by the words you say and your actions, so make sure you show kindness to everyone around you. That is exactly what Jesus did and how He lived His life on earth.

Romans 3:23-24

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.

Romans 3:23-24

Justified by Christ

Every person in this world has sinned and gone against God. We are born into sin, we continue sinning as we grow, until we meet the Savior. We are not able to meet the standards of a holy God on our own. We can never be good enough to get ourselves into heaven. There had to be a way, a bridge, to connect us to God. Jesus became that bridge. God, in his grace, sent His son to die on the cross for our sins. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ freed us from the burdens of our sins and the punishment we deserved. This is the good news about Jesus and the gospel.

This is also the news that we need to tell the world. They don’t understand what sin is and how it impacts them and their eternal life. We hold the key, the answer. Only when they understand their sins and what Christ did for them, can they understand the freedom that he gives and live in that freedom. So share the gift you have been given and tell the world the good news about Jesus.

A Prayer to Remember

Dear Lord,
There are many people in my life who don’t know you. Give me the courage to share the good news about the freedom you have given me. Amen.

Daily Truth: The Fruit of the Spirit is Patience

What comes to mind when you think of the word patient? Do you think of someone sitting and waiting patiently for their turn? Do you think of a child waiting to get something they want? You probably don’t think about a man waiting fourteen years to marry his bride! That’s exactly what happened to Jacob in Genesis 29.

Jacob was captivated the moment he saw Rachel and knew she would be his bride. He soon struck a deal with her father, Laban, to marry her. He would work for seven years and then take her as his bride. Jacob worked hard for those years. However, on the evening of their wedding, Rachel’s dad tricked him and gave his oldest daughter Leah instead. So Jacob had to work for seven more years! It had to have been very difficult to wait and work, not knowing if Laban would deliver on his promise or trick him again. Jacob continued to wait on God and trust that He would provide. That’s exactly what God did. From Jacob came 12 sons (the twelve tribes of Israel). Eventually, Jesus would come from one of those tribes.

Patience is a difficult attribute. It requires trusting someone or something. For the Christian, it means placing your faith and trust in God. When you trust in Him, you are saying that you are going to rely on him for your next breath, your next decision, and the future. Jacob trusted God for many years, not just for a short time. Waiting is not always easy, and often requires a brokenness and a hope that trusts God knows what he’s doing. Patience is turning to God in the waiting, praying and crying out to Him, and praising Him no matter what.

2 Peter 1:16-17

For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

2 Peter 1:16-17

The Father and the Son

Jesus Christ is God’s Son. God has all authority. He sent His Son Jesus to the earth to be a sacrifice for the sins of His people. The sins were so great that nothing else would do. So Jesus became the Lamb of God, The one who was slain for our iniquities. This pleased the Lord, not in a way that made him happy, but instead pleased him to carry out his plan. So he spoke about his son and said, This is my Son, with whom I am well pleased.

You cannot be a Christian without believing in the authority of Jesus Christ, the Son and God the Father. It is the foundation of the faith. Praise Him today for His authority and that God sent Jesus to earth for your sins!

A Prayer to Remember

Dear Lord,
Thank you for my salvation that only comes from you! You have all authority and you are the authority in my life. Amen.

The Fruit of the Spirit is Peace

There are many songs, books, and articles written about peace or finding peace. Some are based on circumstances, like “It Is Well,” when the author lost it his whole family, yet still knew peace because he knew God. Others are more recent praise songs like “Oceans” that talks about having peace in the midst of the storm. Then, there are secular songs that sing about finding world peace, peace instead of war, or finding inner peace in the midst of turmoil. Which kind of peace is the peace in Galatians five, the fruit of the spirit peace?

The peace that Galatians refers to is the peace that only God can give. This is a peace that is produced in us when we surrender our lives to Him and allow Him to lead us. This peace focuses on others rather than ourselves. It is not something we have to find, but something that finds us because of the Holy Spirit alive in us. This is the peace that passes all understanding as Philippians 4:7 states. This peace calms the raging storms in our lives and is evident to those around us when we are in the middle of devastating circumstances. It is infectious, causing others to want what we have. It brings people to Jesus. See the difference between the peace God gives and the peace the world is trying to offer? They can only offer a counterfeit version of the real thing. The world is desperately trying to find the peace that God gives.

Since God has produced peace in our lives, we can be the peace the world needs. When they look for peace, they should be able to see it in the lives of the believers around them. Search in your heart and see if you are allowing that peace to shine and bring others to the throne of God.

Hebrews 11:23

It was by faith that Moses’ parents hid him for three months when he was born. They saw that God had given them an unusual child, and they were not afraid to disobey the king’s command.

Hebrews 11:23

The Faith of Moses’ Parents

This is a very interesting inclusion in the Hebrews 11 phase chapter. Moses’ parents were credited as faithful servants and righteous. They defied the law at the time and hid their son to protect him, knowing that he was special and would be a servant of God. They put their own lives at risk, and as a reward, Moses’ mother got to take care of him and watch him grow up in the house in a row. God was faithful to them because they had been faithful to him.

What are some things you need to do today to show God that you are faithful and you trust him in His leading of your life? Make a list of the ways that you can show God how faithful you are.

A Prayer to Remember

Dear Lord,
May my faith be as the faith of Moses’ parents. May I always trust in you no matter what comes my way. Amen.

Daily Truth: The Fruit of the Spirit is Joy

Joy is often confused with happiness, but they are very different emotions. Happiness is a temporary, fleeting feeling, while joy is a lasting, eternal emotion. Happiness comes and goes, while joy is planted deep in your heart and is there even when you don’t feel happy.

Joy becomes a permanent part of your life when you accept Christ as your Savior. It stays there in every situation. Joy causes you to look up in your circumstances and focus on the good, the right, and the eternal. The biggest difference between happiness and joy is that we don’t have to do anything to receive joy. For happiness to last, we have to constantly find reasons to be happy or do things that make us happy all the time. Happiness is based on us. However, God is the source who gives us joy. It is something He does, not anything we can do. Joy is the light at the end of the tunnel. Happiness has to look for reasons, while joy IS the reason!

Joy lifts you up when you’re down. Joy encourages others. Joy brings hope in a dark world. So think of a time when you’ve been happy. Maybe it was today. What were the circumstances surrounding your happy feeling? Most likely, they were temporary. Now, if you are a Christian, you should be able to think of a time when you experienced the joy God gives. Was it when you were saved? Was it when God answered your prayers? If you don’t know God, pray and ask for his salvation that brings permanent joy. It is a beautiful emotion. If you are redeemed, pray and ask Him to reveal His joy to you every single day.

Job 19:25-27

But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand upon the earth at last. And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see God! I will see him for myself. Yes, I will see him with my own eyes. I am overwhelmed at the thought!

Job 19:25-27

Jesus Christ, the Redeemer

Job knew that His redeemer was alive. He was confident that if anything happened to him in this life, he would wake up and see Jesus in the next. Job had everything against him, lived through tragedy, and came out stronger on the other side, all because He knew God. He had hope knowing that if he died he would see Jesus himself. The thought overwhelmed him.

Job lost his family, his livelihood, and even his health. However, because of his faith, God blessed him tenfold. What about you? Do you have the kind of faith that Job had? Have you been through a tragedy in this life? Did it make you stronger or destroy your faith? Our faith should be built on our relationships with Jesus. If it is built on anything else, it will crumble in the face of danger. If the hope of Christ is our foundation, then our faith will stand strong like Job’s did. Pray today and ask God to strengthen your faith.

A Prayer to Remember

Dear God,
You are the hope of my salvation. In you I place my trust and my hope knowing that my faith shall stand when faced with danger. Amen

Daily Truth: The Fruit of the Spirit is Love

Love can be an emotion that seems to mean something different to many people. To some, it is an intense feeling they have for someone else. For others, it comes with conditions (I love them because they do this for me). For the Christian, it means so much more.

Love is a word that originates from God. He created love. He gives love. He is love. The Christian understands that we only know how to love because God first loved us and taught us how to love. When the believer thinks of love, they think of 1 Corinthians 13 and all of the qualities love has. Love is patient, love is kind, etc. Love never fails. Love binds everything together in perfect unity. The ultimate picture of love was when God sent his one and only son Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Sacrificial love is the greatest type of love.

So how can we love like God loves us? Love is unconditional. There are no limits or parameters to the love of God. Love is unfailing. It doesn’t quit when times get hard. It tries again. It is never-ending. Human love is temporary; God’s love is eternal. It is no accident that love is mentioned first in the fruit of the spirit. When you have Christ living inside of you and you are led by the Holy Spirit, the first fruit you will produce is love: love for your neighbor, love for yourself, and most of all, love for the Lord. So spend some time in prayer today about how you can love others and love God more intensely and intentionally. God is the source, so the only way to love better is to stay connected to the source!
