Today’s Truth: Work as if You Work for the Lord

Even though Christianity is not works based, we work out of our love for the Lord. The same is true in a relationship. If you love someone, you will want to do everything you can to please them. If you love the Lord, you will strive to please Him. Too many times, though, we work for meaningless things, material things.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.” We must check our motivation for the things that we are working for. We must not waste time on meaningless things and things that cannot go with us to the grave. Worldly wisdom and knowledge will not go with us, so the more time we devote to those types of things, the more time we waste on this earth. If we invest in the eternal while we are on earth, we will be blessed and get to be a part of the wonderful things God is doing. For example, if you spend time studying your Bible everyday, then when you go through difficult situations in life, you will have the wisdom from God to carry you through. If you don’t and instead invest in worldly things, then difficult situations might overtake and overwhelm you.

Colossians 3:23 encourages us to, “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” When you work on this earth, work as though you are working for the Lord rather than for man. That will help you stay focused on the Lord and His work, and it will also help you stay motivated to invest in eternal things. Take some time today to really think about the things in this life that you invest in, and spend time in prayer, asking God to help give you an eternal mindset.
