Isaiah 53:5

But he was pierced for our rebellion,
     crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole.
He was whipped so we could be healed. Isaiah 53:5

By His Wounds We Are Healed

Every wound Jesus bore was for us. He took every lash without any complaint. He willingly carried the cross to Golgotha. His love was deeper than any pain he endured. This verse even goes a step further and says that he made us whole with his wounds. He healed us with every strike. Think about that for a minute. Think about your sins and wrongdoings. Think about the wrong choices you have made just in the last week. Every beating he took was to heal you and forgive you from just one of those choices. That is a powerful thought, isn’t it?

We were incomplete and empty before him. We were a sinner walking around with the weight of our sins. By his death, we were forgiven for those sins and not just that, we were healed! Sin causes heartache, sorrow, brokenness, and dire consequences. When we understand his forgiveness, then we do not have to live in that anymore.

A Prayer to Remember

Dear Lord,
I am forgiven and healed. Thank you for taking on my sins and rescuing me. Amen.

Today’s Truth: Committing Adultery

Matthew 5:27-28 says, “You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Adultery begins with a decision. Every decision begins with the mind. When you lust after someone, your lust becomes uncontrollable desires, which leads to decisions. Decisions lead to sin and a lifestyle of consequences. This is why Jesus said that lusting is the same as adultery. He knew what it would lead to.

Adultery is a sin that runs deep. It begins with lustful thoughts; this is where cheating begins. If you want to protect your relationship, the first thing you have to do is protect your heart and mind from the enemy and his schemes. He wants nothing more than to poison and destroy your relationship. Fill your mind with the things of God so that you can protect it. Fill your heart with scriptures so you will know what to do. He can guide you in your life and relationships.

Isaiah 53:4

Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
it was our sorrows that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God,
a punishment for his own sins! Isaiah 53:4

The Weight of the World

He carried the weight of the world on His shoulders. He carried every sin, every insult, every sorrow. He bore them all. He bore them for us. We were the ones whom he loved and adored. I cannot even imagine the weight of it all as he hung on the cross, tortured for us. There is not one person on this earth that could endure what he did. It was supposed to be our torture, our punishment, but yet he did it for us. John 15:13 says, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Christ showed the greatest love of all by laying down his life.

What about you? Do you love others with the type of sacrificial love that Christ showed for you? Are you willing to lay down your life for them? That is a difficult question, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that we lay down our physical lives for our friends, but that we should have that type of humility; we should put others before ourselves.

A Prayer to Remember

Dear Lord,
Thank you for sending Jesus to lay down his life and give the ultimate sacrifice. May I love others in that type of way.

Today’s Truth: Making a Sacrifice

Reconciliation is a theme of the Bible. God takes it very seriously. He reconciled us to himself through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Matthew 5:23-26 says, “So if you are presenting a sacrifice at the altar in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, leave your sacrifice there at the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God.” We are human, so it is only natural that at times we will disagree and strain our relationships. However, when we go before the Lord with bitterness in our hearts, we will not be able to worship properly.

This verse tells us to make right our grievances before worshipping. Why is this so important? When we are worshipping, if we do not have the right frame of mind, it will be difficult to fully worship with a clean heart. Bitterness eats away at the heart and mind and destroys the person it inhabits. You may have heard it said that bitterness only destroys you, not the one who you are bitter against. This is very true for the Christian. If you allow our enemy, the devil, to poison your mind with thoughts of unforgiveness, then you will never be able to worship God unhindered.

Colossians 2:4

I am telling you this so no one will deceive you with well-crafted arguments.

Colossians 2:4

False Teachings

Beware of the false teachers and those who try to deceive. This was common during Paul’s time. He often encountered them and warned others about them as well. New believers were especially prey to false teaching because they did not yet have a firm foundation to stand on.

Today, the body of believers still deals with false teachings. There are many doctrines out there that are not based on the Bible. The enemy would like nothing more than to lead you astray. This is why it is so important to continuously build on your foundation so you will not follow false teachings.

A Prayer to Remember

Dear Lord,
You are the way, the truth, and the life. May I always follow you and no one else. Amen.

Today’s Truth: Unholy Anger

Anger alone is not a sin. However, it can lead to sin. Matthew 5:21-22 says, “You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.” Jesus describes anger as murder. The intent is the same. Anger begins with a thought. That thought stirs a bitterness and hatred inside of you. Murder stems from the same feelings: anger, bitterness, hatred. Both anger and murder both come from these feelings.

You have to be careful when you experience anger. While it is not a sin, if it is not controlled and dealt with, then it becomes sinful. For example, anger with a family member can eventually cause a rift in the relationship that keeps you from communicating. Anger with someone that wronged you can cause ill feelings and resentment toward the person, and these feelings can lead to sin. So, give all of your angry feelings over to the Lord, and allow him to lead you.

Colossians 2:3

In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Colossians 2:3

All Wisdom

Jesus is the key to all happiness and answers. As this verse says, in Him lies the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. He has the wisdom and knowledge you need. The world looks for wisdom anywhere they can. They rely on man, but man does not know even an ounce of what God knows.

He is always the answer. When you are devastated after a loss, look to him. When you are unsure of the future, look to him. When you are upset over a broken relationship, look to him. He wants to be the first place you go when you need help. He wants to be the one to comfort, heal, and love you. Turn to Him today.

A Prayer to Remember

Dear Lord,
You are wisdom. Be my guide and help me through this life. Amen.

Today’s Truth: Your Righteousness

Righteousness alone will not achieve salvation from sin. In Matthew 5:20, Jesus says, “But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!” There is nothing man can do to be better than God. Man only knows righteousness due to his/her encounters with God. 1 Corinthians 3:19, “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God.” Man’s wisdom and righteousness can never compare to the wisdom and righteousness of God. Man’s righteousness is based on his own wisdom and understanding, and this verse makes it clear that man’s wisdom does not go very far.

The good news is that God made a way for man to know and experience his righteousness: through Jesus Christ and his gift of salvation. Romans 1:17 says, “This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” Your faith in Christ will produce righteousness within you. You have the ability to live a righteous life, to make the right decisions, and when you struggle with it, he will offer forgiveness and guidance through the Holy Spirit.

Colossians 2:2

I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself.

Colossians 2:2

A Deep Love

Paul had such a deep compassion for others. He just wanted others to know the passionate love the He had for God and that God had for him. He had been someone who had followed all of the rules and laws and persecuted others for their faith in Jesus. However, the law will never fulfill; only Jesus can fulfill. After Paul came to know the saving knowledge of Jesus, he saw everything in a new light. He understood so much more about the Christian life. His passion for others was ignited inside him.

Can you say the same about yourself? Do you want others to be encouraged and knit together by ties of love? Do you have complete confidence in their understanding? If not, spend some time in prayer today about how you can love others in this way.

A Prayer to Remember

Dear Lord,
Thank you for loving me in such a deep way. May I love others in that same way. Amen.

Today’s Truth: Fulfilling the Law

The Pharisees hated Jesus because they thought he came to abolish the law and replace what they had known and taught. Jesus says in the sermon on the mount: “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.” His entire purpose was to make a way for people to be saved. The law cannot save anyone from their sin. God gave man the law for two reasons: one, to show man how to live, and two to fulfill the purpose of the law.

No one can completely keep the law everyday. We are born with a sin nature that desires to please itself rather than God. We have to constantly evaluate the decisions we make, whether they honor God or not. God has given us the Holy Spirit to help us know how to live. He guides us and leads us toward what is good and right. The law shows us our need for a Savior. It points us to Jesus. We need the law so that we know the depths of our sins.
